The Art Institute strives to make its collection accessible and engaging by offering visitors—and readers—new ways to experience and enjoy these works. This selection of postcards celebrates the rich tradition as well as bold invention of artists working in Spain during the 14th through 20th centuries. The religious art featured here includes a large-scale medieval altarpiece as well as one of the Art Institute’s greatest treasures: The Assumption of the Virgin, created in the 16th century by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco. Paintings by artists such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbarán, and their contemporaries of the Spanish Golden Age are showcased alongside Francisco de Goya’s 19th-century canvases. Modern artworks produced by Spanish painters during the 20th century include Pablo Picasso’s iconic The Old Guitarist, a Cubist portrait by Juan Gris, and Surrealist images by Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí.
